Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre of the Federal Government of Somalia has officially launched the Badmaal Project, an ambitious initiative to support thousands of Somali fishermen and revitalize the country’s fishing industry infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch event, Prime Minister Hamza highlighted the transformative potential of the Badmaal project, emphasizing its focus on empowering coastal communities, improving marine resource management and fostering stronger links between fishing cooperatives across the country.

“This project will improve the livelihoods of our fishermen by providing them with better equipment, advanced training and better income opportunities,” the Prime Minister said. “It is also a crucial step in rebuilding the vital economic infrastructure that supports Somalia’s fishing sector.”

The Badmaal program aims to unlock the potential of Somalia’s rich marine resources by addressing skills and technology deficits while creating a robust and sustainable fishing industry. By investing in fishing cooperatives and strengthening the economic foundations of coastal communities, the initiative aims to boost the national economy and ensure long-term benefits for Somalia’s fishing sector.

The program is a cornerstone of the government’s broader strategy to use the country’s natural resources responsibly while promoting the growth and resilience of the blue economy.
