Somalia has received 79.7 million dollars from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to support the implementation of the “Climate Resilient Agriculture in Somalia (Ugbaad)” project. This transformative initiative aims to strengthen the country’s agriculture and food systems while aligning with Somalia’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The project will make an important contribution to sustainable development and climate change adaptation in the region

The approval of this project within only five months underlines the effectiveness of Somali advocacy and the importance of lean processes. It also demonstrates the importance of aligning national objectives with GCF funding criteria and fostering close cooperation with international partners, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The ministers and government representatives thanked Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for his strong political leadership, which has been instrumental in securing funding. Special thanks also went to the Executive Director of the GCF, who recently visited Somalia, underlining the global recognition of Somalia’s commitment to the fight against climate change.

Somalia also acknowledged the UK’s continued support for climate finance in the country. This funding is a crucial step in addressing the impacts of climate change and strengthening the resilience of Somalia’s agricultural sector.
