Jinow is a member of the Burseraceae plant family. It is found in East African countries, including Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. It is a wild tree with sharp thorns that reaches a height of around 3.5 to 4 meters. It sheds its leaves during the dry season, making it a deciduous plant that is not evergreen. When the tree is injured or cut, it releases a white resin that protects it from disease.

The young leaves and tender shoots (small parts of the plant or branches) are edible and are usually picked and chewed. They have a slightly bitter yet spicy taste and contain a type of natural salt known as oxalic acid. The leaves can also be cooked with food to enhance the flavour. The tree bark or peel is often used to make tea. Chewing the leaves and tender shoots is also said to help with coughs and chest pains.
