Type: Hourly, Full-Time (45 hours/week)
Compensation: $13.00 – $15.00 per hour

Organization Overview

OEF is a nonprofit organization focused on reducing armed conflict through effective governance systems. It operates globally, with projects aimed at supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in fragile regions. Through Shuraako, a program of OEF, the organization manages the Nordic Horn of Africa Opportunities Fund (NHAOF), providing growth capital in Somalia and East Africa.

Role Overview

The ESG Officer ensures compliance with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards for the NHAOF and supports investment, compliance, and business development activities. This role involves conducting assessments, monitoring ESG-related activities, and supporting investee businesses in improving ESG performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze investment deals for ESG compliance and suitability.
  • Conduct ESG assessments, site visits, and due diligence using standards like IFC Performance Standards and local laws.
  • Guide investee businesses on health and safety measures (e.g., PPE, incident logs).
  • Deliver health and safety training with stakeholders.
  • Perform ESG risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with OEF teams and clients to improve ESG performance.
  • Prepare ESG reports, including annual performance summaries.
  • Travel within Somalia (and potentially East Africa) to conduct ESG activities.
  • Support development and updates of ESG policies and procedures.
  • Assist in compliance investigations and reporting as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, business administration, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in ESG or social impact roles.
  • Experience in health and safety standards, especially in manufacturing, textiles, or agriculture.
  • Familiarity with IFC Performance Standards, human rights frameworks, and ILO declarations.
  • Strong analytical, compliance, and risk assessment skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and written/spoken English and Somali.
  • Ability to travel and meet physical demands of the job.
