A Journey of Resilience: Maslah’s Story of Farming and Hope

A Journey of Resilience: Maslah’s Story of Farming and Hope: Maslah grew up in Lower Shabelle, where he watched his parents grow maize, sesame, and vegetables to support their family of 11. After his father passed away, Maslah took over the family farm, setting aside his dreams of studying agriculture at university. Unfortunately, conflict and drought devastated their land, forcing the family to flee to Mogadishu.

Now, Maslah works on a farm at City University in Mogadishu. Here, he has gained life-changing skills in sustainable farming and water management. In late 2024, he attended a demonstration organized by IOM Somalia in collaboration with Nuros 9 and partners running the Jowhar Offstream Storage Programme. The event focused on regenerative resilience, teaching methods to turn arid lands into productive farms.

Maslah plans to take these skills back to his home region. He dreams of creating demonstration farms to teach his community year-round farming techniques. His goal is to improve food security, generate stable incomes, and build resilience against climate challenges. His vision could transform agriculture in Lower Shabelle, where farming remains limited to rainy seasons and outdated methods.

This initiative is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), with contributions from the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia, and the UK in Somalia. Maslah’s inspiring journey highlights the power of knowledge, resilience, and collaboration in creating lasting change for communities.
