Addressing Agricultural Challenges in Somalia

During the National Security Council meeting chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, critical national security issues were discussed, including the security transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). In addition to military and security matters, the meeting also addressed pressing agricultural challenges affecting Somali farmers.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation presented a comprehensive report highlighting major obstacles faced by farmers, particularly illegal checkpoints (“isbaaro”) and unauthorized taxes imposed in parts of the Shabelle Dhexe and Shabelle Hoose regions. These issues have significantly hindered agricultural productivity and disrupted the economic stability of rural farming communities.

The report emphasized how illegal taxation and movement restrictions prevent farmers from transporting their produce to local and regional markets. As a result, many farmers face declining incomes, reduced agricultural investment, and food insecurity risks, all of which contribute to the broader economic challenges Somalia faces.

In response, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud instructed relevant government agencies to take immediate action to eliminate these illegal checkpoints and protect farmers from exploitation. He stressed the importance of ensuring that farmers have secure access to markets and receive fair compensation for their produce. He reiterated that boosting agricultural productivity is critical for Somalia’s economic recovery, food security, and national stability.

The National Security Council committed to implementing measures aimed at removing barriers to agricultural trade and enhancing rural infrastructure. This effort is expected to improve the livelihoods of farmers while strengthening Somalia’s agricultural sector as a foundation for long-term economic development.
