The Minister of Agriculture and Hyena JFS, Major Mohamed Abdi Hayir Mareeye, inaugurated a state-of-the-art agricultural development laboratory on Wednesday. This milestone marks a significant step in modernizing Somalia’s agricultural sector.
The new facility, equipped with advanced technology, will enhance research to improve agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and promote sustainable farming. It will focus on soil analysis, crop testing, pest management, and innovative farming techniques suited to Somalia’s unique challenges.
During the ceremony, Minister Mareeye highlighted the importance of science and innovation in transforming Somali agriculture. He stated, “This laboratory is a turning point for Somali farmers. It will support research, provide tools to increase productivity, and address climate change challenges.”
The lab will give smallholder farmers access to better seeds, fertilizers, and technical support based on scientific knowledge. Its establishment aligns with the government’s efforts to strengthen agricultural policy and achieve sustainable development goals.
Farmers, agricultural experts, and international partners attending the event expressed optimism about the lab’s potential to boost Somali agriculture’s growth and resilience.
