Baar belongs to the Arecaceae plant family. It can grow up to 20 meters high and is an evergreen tree. It grows in the wild and is not cultivated. The Baar is closely related to the coconut and the date palm.
The tree has long branches and broad leaves called garbi, which are often used in construction, especially for roofing material. Its parts are also used to make various items such as mats, baskets, brooms, fans and chairs.
Baar thrives in hot, dry regions, including Somalia, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique.
It produces fruit known as Qoono, which has a sweet taste and is especially popular with children. However, the pulp is not swallowed but spat out after the juice has been squeezed out. The fruit is also used to treat intestinal diseases caused by worms.
